Multi source feedback (MSF) is a form of appraisal surgeons need to do throughout training. I personally think its one of the most useful markers of a surgeons effectiveness, credibility, and safety, as it comes from a range of different MDT staff.
Below are my annual MSF global ratings from throughout neurosurgical training. I take pride in seeking feedback from a large number and wide range of people and I hope this provides insight into the kind of doctor I am.
Green is "satisfactory" and blue is "excellent". The numbers represent number of responders. I received no "inadequate" gradings.
Overall over 9 years of training and 279 responses at multi source feedback, 77% of colleagues anonymously rated me as excellent
- "Mr Wood is outstanding in all aspects of his work. He is active in teaching junior trainees delivering at least once weekly seminars and invests huge amounts of his own time in setting up spaces for microscope and surgical skills training for the department. He also invests in the well-being of his co-workers and makes sure they feels valued. In terms of knowledge Mr Wood is exceptional and has been a wonderful mentor to me and other more junior trainees - making sure we understand the reasons behind decision-making, anatomy and encouraging us to be reflective in our practice. Mr Wood is an asset to the neurosurgery department". MSF 2023
- "Joseph is the driving force behind much of what happens in the Neurosurgery department. He is responsible for many of the significant improvements that have taken place over recent years (eg. the JCF programme). He is extremely invested in the wellbeing of his junior colleagues and never takes out his own troubles on his team members. Without Joseph's work, not only would the junior tier be in great trouble, but patient care would be significantly worse. He is committed to teaching and is by far the biggest driving force behind regular training and teaching for the junior tier. Over recent years, Joseph has managed junior neurosurgery staffing in the unit with minimal direct input from HR. This is an enormous challenge which he has risen to admirably without complaint. Joseph is a pleasure to work with". MSF 2023
- "Consistently one of the central drivers in the department; has implemented huge changes at a variety of levels to improve practice and training. Clinically good, with an excellent knowledge base. Technically competent, safe and effective surgeon". MSF 2023
- "Joseph is principled, full of energy and protective of the juniors. He cares about the department and strives to improve it systemically". MSF 2023
- "Joe has created a fantastic teaching plan for the SHO and SpRs on neurosurgery. He goes above and beyond to make sure this happens. He is responsible for making sure that we had a fantastic induction before starting neurosurgery - he prepped us all extremely well for the job and was always on hand to help. He is fun to work with and motivates others. In the operating theatre he takes his time to teach and explain procedures in detail. He has been fantastic in pushing for change in our IT dept and improving efficiency in using technology. He thinks laterally and has quick and effective diagnostic skills. Always ensures patient safety and works well with the MDT to ensure this". MSF 2023
- "Joe wood is an excellent registrar! A pioneer of clinical excellence He strives to uphold a great standard of clinical care for patients. He is truly an encyclopaedia of knowledge and one of the best registrars I have come across". MSF 2023

MSF 2023
- "Excellent teaching skills, highly regarded as a trainer within the department. Has arranged multiple training courses and study days that have been well attended by trainees and consultants. Communicates effectively and maintains strong relationships with colleagues at all levels. Treats all members of the team with respect and is consistently approachable and willing to clarify care plans where necessary. Takes on leadership roles to arrange team activities and ensure all members receive appropriate supervision and training. Contributes significantly to the wellbeing of the staff". MSF 2023
- "Mr Wood is an inspiring trainee, who takes great pride in all his clinical efforts and communication with patients, relatives, juniors, seniors and the multidisciplinary team. Mr Wood has made exemplary efforts in leading and organising neurosurgical teaching at our unit and is the key factor in numerous SHO's applying to the competitive SHO and Junior Clinical Fellow programme run by Mr Wood. He has made extensive efforts to ensure teaching and training is regular and consistent, and specifically directed to the cohort he teaches. Additionally, he has motivated a number of other trainees and consultants to get involved, and organises specialised teaching led by other seniors in the department. In addition to the above, Mr Wood has developed a natural role in providing mentorship to junior registrars and SHOs within the department. He is always approachable and provides an environment that allows individuals to ask questions, takes the time to support as much as possible, and advocates for his team whenever required. On numerous occasions, myself and other SHOs have felt comfortable going to Mr Wood with personal stresses as much as work stress, confident that he will find the time to listen and think of strategies to help. In a time when the NHS is under immense pressure, Mr Wood has managed to excel further - he will continually adapt his role within his competencies and step up to more senior responsibilities to support the neurosurgical team. It is evident he is well-trusted by his consultants. Mr Wood always challenges himself, as much as he is keen to impart knowledge, he is very motivated to build on his own skills. Mr Wood has been a great support and inspiration to numerous individuals in the MDT, and it is always enjoyable working with him". MSF 2023
- "Mr Wood is a brilliant registrar to work with. He is incredibly supportive towards his juniors, very approachable, and goes above and beyond for the team. He is an excellent teacher and has outstanding knowledge of neuroanatomy (as demonstrated during his anatomy teaching session for Junior Clinical Fellows a few months ago). Despite having multiple professional responsibilities, Mr Wood continues to invest time and effort to the training and development for junior doctors within the unit. His ability to manage a high workload with his excellent organisational skills is very admirable. Additionally, there have been multiple occasions where I have required his guidance for acutely unwell patients and his decisions have always been sound. His patient also appreciate him as do the rest of the neurosurgical team. I have learned a great deal from him about what it takes to be a brilliant neurosurgeon". MSF 2023
- "Joseph is a fantastic clinician and a true asset to the department and the NHS. Clinically, he is very knowledgeable and confident in his decision making, diagnosis and management skills, tackling complex issues with ease and swiftness. Moreover, he maintains great communication with patients and fellow peers making them feel listened to and included. Joe is also very efficient and elite in time management, completing complex tasks proficiently without compromising safety or quality. Furthermore, Joe is a fantastic team leader with great capabilities in leading a team of juniors and assigning specific roles for each member to efficiently complete the tasks at hand. He has created detailed tutorials, diagrams, flowcharts and even a dedicated extensive neurosurgical website to aid the other clinicians in the department (especially new-comers) in understanding the system and swiftly getting to speed with the inner workings of the neurosurgical team. This is something highly admirable as despite his ultra busy schedule, he has gone above and beyond to make others’ work-life easier and soften transitions into the department. All in all, Joe is a very capable and knowledgeable clinician and is a fantastic colleague to work with. He embodies all the qualities of the registrar that I aspire to be and I wish him all the best in his future career". MSF 2023
- "Joseph is an exemplary team player. Joseph routinely checks in with other members of the team to see how they are managing workload and give advice where applicable. As such I always felt extremely well supported working with Joseph. Joseph gave regular teaching both in the form of formal teaching in small groups (with focussed learning objectives) and impromptu bedside teaching where an interesting case/complication/presentation arose. Joseph makes teaching of juniors a day-to-day feature in his work and this facilitates an environment of deep learning. Joseph is a clear and concise communicator, both with members of the MDT and patients". MSF 2023
- "Mr Joseph Wood is an extremely supportive and knowledgeable registrar. He is willing to provide teaching and training opportunities to SHOs both on the wards and in theatres. Mr Wood is a reliable and inspiring senior figures for his juniors". MSF 2023
